Abstract

This chapter explores the intersection of transport, spatial mobility, sustainability and impacts of tourism on CO2 emissions and climate change. It examines transport's dual role as both an utility and an experience, shaping travel behavior and tourism mobility planning. The discussion includes distance decay effects, transport choices at destinations or the implications of tourism-related transport on global environmental sustainability. Both urban and non-urban mobility challenges are considered, along with the role of public and soft transport modes, as alternatives to the reliance on private motorized vehicles. The chapter also evaluates regulatory frameworks, including emissions trading systems, sustainable aviation fuel policies, or multimodal transport alternatives. It highlights the complexities of implementing sustainable tourism mobility strategies due to economic, political and technological constraints. Ultimately, an integrated approach involving digital tools, infrastructure investment and behavioral incentives seems necessary to reconcile tourism mobility with environmental sustainability while ensuring accessibility and visitor satisfaction.
