Abstract

Part A of the book investigates the role of tourism as a functioning mechanism through which the endowment of cultural heritage shows a positive impact on local economic development. Given the mainstream nature of the association between cultural heritage and tourism, and because of the importance of tourism sector for economies worldwide, the economic literature has extensively worked on this topic. The second chapter of the book presents a review of the applied economics literature that investigates the relationship between cultural heritage and tourism followed by the review of the literature that instead focuses on the link between tourism and economic development. Two main trends and controversial issues related with tourism in general and cultural tourism in particular are illustrated in the second part of the chapter: the overtourism phenomenon and the consequences of the COVID-19 crisis on the evolution of tourism.
