Abstract

The first chapter aims at introducing the topic of the book providing a comprehensive review of the concept of cultural heritage. In fact, the main goal of the book is to explore and to delve into the realm of cultural heritage in the attempt to empirically prove and measure its beneficial impact on local economic development. Thoroughly investigating some of the mechanisms through which cultural heritage, interpreted as a shared resource, contributes to enhancing local economic conditions is the main objective of the book and is preliminary described in this first chapter. The characterization of cultural heritage and the evolution of its definition are followed by a review of the literature that studies cultural heritage according to an economic perspective. The identification of some gaps left open to explore by this literature introduces the innovative contributions of the book: the empirical validation of two different mechanisms through which the endowment of cultural heritage is beneficial in economic terms to local society, namely tourism attractiveness and territorial identity enhancement. The proposed conceptual framework and the structure of the book are also presented in the first chapter.
