Abstract

Climate change does not know borders, contributing to the fast deterioration of life. An effective approach to face climate change challenges is through cross-border cooperation, which could be the catalyst to stop the ecosystem degradation and develop the basis for a more sustainable development paradigm. In this regard, this chapter aims to assess and define common strategies against climate change challenges that urban settlements in the Danube area of the Western Balkan region (WBR) and neighbouring countries are facing through climate change management and cross-border cooperation. The main objective of the chapter is to update knowledge about the climate challenge for the benefit of policymakers, regional and urban planners, nature protection authorities, regional and local development agencies in region. To achieve the proposed objectives, the research covers not only the themes related to climate changes but also the bureaucratic procedures associated with border areas which are seen as pivotal for territorial success.
