The North Korean Economy and Peninsula Security from the Perspective of Peace Studies

Abstract

The background factors of the Korean War are complex. The post-war security of the Korean Peninsula involves its internal situation and the multiple latitudes of the outside world. Economic issues constitute one of the main factors that need to be understood to solve the peninsula security problem. For a number of reasons, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) failed to copy the “miracle on the Han River”. After the 1970s, the economic development was obviously weak, and the difference in the level of economic development between the DPRK and the Republic of Korea (ROK) increased rapidly. In the case of the Korean Peninsula, a creative way of discovering the truth is needed, and the responsibilities of the parties involved in the conflict should be seriously considered. The two Koreas should become the most important players and peacebuilders. And the international community cannot really promote a solution to the problem by unilaterally isolating either side or acting alone. Government-to-government contact between the United States and the DPRK is one of the best ways to fully understand the DPRK issue and the fundamental solution to the crisis on the Korean Peninsula.
