The Centrality of Sustainable Peace in Africa’s Development Agenda: The Mali Experience

Abstract

For several years, many African countries have struggled with spates of conflict, with their attendant impact, not only on regional security but, more so, the implications for continental development. While peace initiatives multiply on conflict resolution platforms, this paper investigates how the nature of the peace created affects the longevity of peace projects, which may either germinate novel developmental agenda or terminate ongoing developmental efforts. This research uses secondary sources of information, and the data gathered were analyzed using narrations and descriptive surveys. The study concludes that developmental projects can only thrive in an atmosphere of sustainable peace. Using the Malian experience, it suggests that African countries in conflict situations should import a sustainable peace model, as the kernel that absolves not only the sources of conflicts but ensures that development is not ignored during peacebuilding deliberations. The outline of this work covers the Introduction; the complementary grounds between sustainable peace and development; the Mali experience; conflicts in northern Mali, the deliberate underdevelopment agenda; challenges of the creation of sustainable peace in Mali; and the Conclusion.
