Abstract

In Nigeria, as in most developing countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, industrialization is seen as central to the goal of achieving rapid socio-economic development. This is because of the apparent positive correlation between industrialization and socio-economic progress as demonstrated by the high standard of living achieved in the industrialized countries of Western Europe, USA, Canada, Japan and lately the People’s Republic of China. Thus Nigeria, like the other emerging nation states, had been preoccupied with the goal of transforming its largely agrarian economy to an industrialized one within the shortest possible time so as to accelerate overall socio-economic development as well as catch up in due course with the more advanced economies.
