Abstract

The book advances scholarly understanding of the South African business cycle and its relation to structural change, helping to inform policymaking. The volume helps us, in particular, to understand business cycle developments in South Africa in the post-financial crisis era, by challenging persistent narratives that characterize the South African macroeconomic policy discourse. These include arguments related to irrationally negative business sentiment, the resilience of the economy, the impact of international shocks, and the role of finance. Alternatively, consistent with the taxonomy of the business cycle literature suggested in earlier chapters, the volume provides new insights related to business cycle measurement, business cycle forecasting, and business cycle stabilization policy.
