Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of the regulatory framework of short sea shipping, with emphasis on the new conventions that may harm its competitiveness. A discussion of the different emission limits across different modes of transport presents the applicable requirements and illustrates that SSS has a lower environmental footprint. Next, the implications of the Ballast Water Management (BWM) Convention for SSS are analysed and it is explained that this convention must be adjusted to the unique characteristics of SSS. Finally, the chapter provides an account of the social impact of SSS, with special regard to the connectivity of isolated areas, the high safety standards, and the job creation without requiring huge public investments.
