Participation in Landing Beach Enforcement Activities and Social Resilience of Artisanal Fishermen: Insights from Coastal Ghana

Abstract

Artisanal fisheries are central to food security and livelihoods in Ghana, but are increasingly vulnerable to environmental and governance challenges. This study examines the relationship between participation in the Landing Beach Enforcement Committee (LABEC), a community-based fisheries co-management initiative, and the social resilience of artisanal fishermen in Ghana. Using a quantitative design, data were collected from 376 artisanal fishermen and analyzed with STATA version 17. Reliability analysis showed strong internal consistency for both participation (α = 0.959) and social resilience (α = 0.834) scales. Results indicate a positive association between participation in LABEC activities and social resilience of fishermen (r = 0.094), while fishermen with higher participation levels are 14.2% more likely to be socially resilient compared to those with little or no participation. The study concludes that participatory governance through LABEC enhances adaptive capacity, institutional trust, and sustainable practices, reinforcing its role in promoting resilient coastal livelihoods. Policy implications are discussed in the chapter.
