Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of the Bangladesh port sector, focusing on governance and finance. The Bangladesh port industry relies heavily on the Chittagong Port and Mongla Port, two main operational ports. Two other ports are under development, the Payra Port and Matarbari deep-sea port. In addition, the port system includes 23 inland ports and 22 river ports. All ports of the country operate under the governance of the Ministry of Shipping of the Government of Bangladesh. Public authority governance prevails among the majority of the ports in Bangladesh, although Public–Private Partnerships (PPPs) are gaining momentum in recent years. Among the PPP projects, the majority of them involve domestic private firms. Future port development challenges are discussed.
