Abstract

This chapter shows how credit, because it is an indicator of economic activity, reflects differing patterns of growth and development within the same chronological period in England. Whereas in 1285–1289 English credit recorded in the certificates showed the same concentrations as that of the aliens in London, Lincolnshire and Hampshire, it differed from them in higher concentrations in Yorkshire and Shropshire. The chapter explains why and gives detailed surveys of wealth and credit in these leading counties.
