Abstract

In this book, we examine the evolving relationship between business and society from 1450 to the mid-1900s with a range of cases. The scholars’ work collected here explores an array of places and times involving different players. Nevertheless, the articles share a common theme: the constantly evolving interaction between business and society. The notion of business as we know it today formed over the course of this 500-year period—in political, legal, social, and even moral terms. Roles and expectations have continued to evolve and changed again and again. In this brief afterword, I place the essays in this book into the context of the ongoing work of the Lee-Chin Institute and other organizations interested in the relationships between business and society.
