Abstract

The fourth centenary of the Breve trattato delle cause che possono far abbondare li regni d’oro e d’argento dove non sono miniere con applicazione al Regno di Napoli, published in Naples in 1613,1 has presented an important opportunity to reflect on its content, on its author Antonio Serra, and on the context in which his ideas developed and matured.2 Although many studies have been written about the volume and its author, analyses of the Breve trattato ‘s theoretical content have as yet failed to examine similarities between Serra’s thought and that of early 17th-century Portuguese arbitristas in any depth. The relevant points of contact between these two areas deserve to be highlighted, and they can provide crucial insights into the author’s life and the circumstances in which his work appeared.
