Abstract

This chapter examines the intersection of Islamic finance and cryptocurrency technology, emphasizing the fusion of traditional Islamic values with modern innovation. By exploring the historical roots of the Dinar, intricately linked with gold and silver, the chapter provides a comprehensive understanding of its evolution into a digital currency. The focus is on the design, ethical implications, and Sharia compliance of the Islamic Dinar Cryptocurrency, highlighting its potential to enhance financial stability and inclusivity. Addressing a significant research gap, this chapter examines how blockchain technology can support Islamic financial principles while adapting to contemporary financial needs. It explores the potential of the Islamic Dinar to offer a Sharia-compliant alternative to conventional cryptocurrencies, which often conflict with Islamic ethical standards due to issues such as Riba (interest) and Gharar (uncertainty). Through detailed case studies of OneGram, EmaratCoin, and Hayvn, the chapter illustrates the practical applications and challenges of these digital currencies. The integration of blockchain technology is extensively discussed, emphasizing its role in enhancing accountability, transparency, and operational efficiency. The chapter also addresses various challenges, including regulatory uncertainties, technological obstacles, and market volatility, offering strategic recommendations for overcoming these hurdles. These recommendations include fostering collaboration between regulators and developers, implementing advanced security measures, and promoting financial literacy to facilitate broader adoption.
