Abstract

With the current growing public interest in cryptocurrencies due to the massive gains some coins have achieved, an ever-increasing number of investors are showing interest in this relatively new form of investment. This chapter investigates factors affecting investors’ trust in cryptocurrency through exploratory qualitative research employing in-depth semi-structured interviews with nineteen current crypto investors through a snowball sampling strategy. The chapter proposes a theoretical structure of five aspects (technological, social, regulations, developers, and specifications) affecting investors’ trust. Results reveal two categories of investors in relation to the level of trust in cryptocurrency investment: (1) believers are investors who have a higher level of trust that has been built through longer experience and knowledge about the crypto market and coins specifications, (2) nonbelievers are investors with a lower level of trust in cryptocurrency investments due to shorter and negative experience and lack of comprehensive understanding of basic relevant concepts. The theoretical framework has proven successful in this exploratory study that can be examined in a further quantitative study.
