Charity and Usury: Reunified

Abstract

This chapter attempts to recreate the primordial link between charity and usury and argues that neither concept can be understood independent of the other. The chapter traces the essential relationship between charity and usury that existed in the intellectual discourse of ancient traditions and the theology of the Old and New Testaments. This relationship was gradually severed with the rise of modern secular thought. By examining Islamic scripture and theology, we reunite charity and usury in the context of this past tradition, thus enlightening us to the fundamental contrast between the two concepts and the respective worldviews that they represent.
