Abstract

By the end of the decade, Mora was settled in Spain and had resumed his publishing activities in a range of fields that included literature, history, classical culture and book reviews. He also worked as a journalist, reporting on international politics and political economy, especially economic policy. The main launching pad for his new phase as an information provider was La América. Crónica Hispano-Americana, the publication that was also part of the rapprochement strategy of the Spanish economic elites vis-à-vis former overseas territories in an attempt to recover lost ground in the spheres of culture and, above all, trade. Political economy figured prominently in the articles Mora wrote for the journal. These were concentrated into the first year of his regular collaboration from March 1860 onwards, and in several, he unveiled his aim of spreading the principles and beneficial consequences of the abolition of customs tariffs, a commitment based on the experience of the Anti-Corn Law League in England.
