Abstract

This chapter examines how blockchain-enabled distributed trust can support the digitalization of value chains for SMEs in the agri-food and tourism sectors. First, a critical literature review develops a conceptual framework linking core blockchain features (decentralization, transparency, immutability, smart contracts, interoperability) to improvements in traceability, certification, ESG reporting, and inclusion of small actors within global value chains. The framework highlights enabling conditions, including digital infrastructure, skills, regulatory clarity, and collaborative governance. Second, the chapter presents survey evidence from 127 organizations across Cyprus, Greece, Belgium, Serbia, and Türkiye, gathered within the Erasmus+ Block4SME project. Results show substantial awareness and skills gaps, limited experimentation with blockchain, and strong concerns about regulatory uncertainty, technical complexity, security, and implementation costs. Respondents nonetheless identify training, awareness-raising, demonstrators, user-friendly interfaces, and better infrastructure as key levers for adoption. The chapter concludes that blockchain can enhance SME resilience and competitiveness, provided it is embedded in supportive ecosystems.
