Sports as a Driver of Social Transformation: A Systematic Literature Review and Analysis of Social Responsibility, PhilanthropyPhilanthropy and Sustainability

Abstract

This chapter conducts a systematic review of the literature on social issues, corporate social responsibility, philanthropy, and sustainability in sports, culminating in the ‘Triple Nexus Framework’. Analysing 108 publications from Scopus and Web of Science [2000–2024] via a PRISMA 2020 protocol, the chapter identifies four interconnected thematic clusters: social issues and equity, CSR and governance, philanthropy and community engagement, and sustainability and transformation. The framework synthesises these clusters, demonstrating how social issues serve as an ethical impulse that activates complementary institutional responses through CSR and moral-emotional actions through philanthropy. Together, these pathways link to generate systemic outcomes aligned with SDGs. This chapter overcomes fragmented approaches by uniting ethics, strategy, and performance into a single, dynamic model, offering a valuable tool for researchers to operationalise social value and for managers to align sports practices with ESG and SDG standards.
