Abstract

In an era of accelerating technological disruption, artificial intelligence, and digital innovation, have become essential for organisational survival. Yet many digital transformations underperform – not due to technology, but because of human and leadership factors. This chapter explores how leadership behaviours influence the adoption and success of digital technologies within organisation. Drawing on a case study conducted within a global Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) organisation, this chapter examines how specific leadership behaviours influence the adoption and effective use of digital technologies. Key insights from this research highlight the centrality of two fundamental emotions – fear and trust – in shaping organisational responses to digital innovation. Transparency emerges as a distinctive differentiator from traditional technology. The findings confirm that digital transformation succeeds when human transformation succeeds. Building on these insights, the chapter introduces a new leadership framework centered in leaders’ ability to emotionally connect, with the aim of removing fear and fostering trust as critical enablers of change. Through the core leadership behaviours of Empower, Engage, and Enable, the study reframes digital transformation from a technology-centric to a leadership- and people-driven process. By emphasising the human dimension of digital transformation, it highlights how leaders can bridge the gap between technological innovation and organisational readiness.
