Abstract

This chapter aims to demonstrate how the application of a HRO strategy revolving around resilience engineering can strengthen banks in their ability to withstand extreme events. By implementing the five principles of high-reliability organizations outlined in this book, the chapter seeks to identify and map the indicators that emerge when these principles are put into practice. To validate the practicality of these concepts, the chapter applies the five principles to the case of Countrywide Financial Corp, in the scope of the 2007–2008 GFC as well as the cases of SVB and Signature Bank in the scope of the 2023 banking crisis. In addition, the chapter also proposes a template for a roadmap for banks to implement the advocated HRO strategy as well as a discussion on the potential challenges banks may face with such an implementation.
