Abstract

The unifying aim of this book has been to present an overview of the history and the macroeconomic and structural changes, as well as enlargement and development, of the European banking sector, with the major emphasis being on the effects of the introduction of the single currency, regulatory changes and the recent global financial crisis. In addition, its intention was to examine the financial structure and performance of the European banking industry and to look at its future by examining recent developments in relation to the probable candidate countries. Overall, the book contributes to the European banking sector’s past, present and future. Specifically, it is one of few works that have examined and brought together various sources in one place; it can be viewed as an extended version of the work Efficiency in European Banking by Molyneux and colleagues (1996). The major findings can be summarized as follows.
