The Cooperative Credit System in Italy

Abstract

The pace of Italian GDP growth has showed a modest performance in the period from 2001 to 2006 reaching an average of 0.9 against an average of 1.8 in EU15. If the longer period of 1996-2006 is considered, the Italian economic performance improves to an average of 1.4, which remains lower than the EU 15 average of 2.3. While the Italian economy does not seem to be able to sort out the problems that slow down its growth, the Italian banking system has undergone deep changes since the turn of the twentieth century. Once dominated by the public sector, the Italian banking system is today almost completely privatized and counts, among its ranks, some of the major European banking groups. Still, the size of the banking industry has not reached the same dirnension of the major European countries (see Figure 8.1).
