Abstract

The following two chapters provide a narrative of the arrival of MNEs until the outbreak of World War One. The date of the break between them, 1870, reflects an approximate point of transition regarding the scale of the Australian economy, the drivers of its economic development and broader shifts in the presence of MNEs in the global economy. This chapter discusses the arrival of 200 MNEs into Australia from the 1820s until 1870. We observe where they came from, when they entered, their longevity in Australia and in which industries they were mainly to be found. Briefly, they were overwhelmingly British, nearly 60 per cent arrived in the decade of the 1850s and more than 80 per cent were in four industries—in the descending order of importance, mining, transport, finance and agriculture. Turnover rates were high, with less than half of our cohort of MNEs known to have survived beyond 1870.
