Abstract

This chapter outlines the geological mapping, prospecting, economic planning, and ore surveys that were carried out by the public organisation Geological Survey of Norway and links this work to the start-up of new mining projects. The chapter first provides an introduction to the importance of such work for the development of mining and then goes on to relate the work of the Survey to the advance of the mining sector and the branching out of the large-scale electro-metallurgical industry in Norway in the late nineteenth century by using articles, reports, and secondary literature.
