Abstract

In this chapter, the author gives an outline of the development of the mining sector in Norway from around 1860 to 1940, using both qualitative and quantitative analyses. Production, mineral and metal prices, and exports are presented, and official mining statistics is used to calculate how much the average worker produced of minerals and metals. Moreover, the technological transformation that the sector went through, in terms of power sources, working techniques, machinery, equipment, and organisation forms, is described. The aim of the chapter is to demonstrate important changes in the sector and provide a framework for the subsequent in-depth qualitative analysis of the functions and performances of key knowledge organisations.
