Abstract

This chapter sets out the aim of the book, discusses the relevant scholarship, and offers a summary of the main hypothesis. The aim of the book is to explain a simple fact. Between the 1950s and the present times, the economy of South Asia has seen a turnaround. During 1960–1990, growth in income per head in the region fell behind the world average. In the next 25 years, South Asia was one of the fastest growing regions of the world, and catching up with the world average income. Why did the turnaround happen? This chapter explains why it is necessary to consider the countries in South Asia together in order to answer the question.
