Abstract

This chapter draws together the conclusions of the volume, emphasizing the crucial role of religious tourism—particularly Catholic pilgrimages—in the emergence and consolidation of mass tourism in Italy. It underscores the significant contribution of both ecclesiastical and lay Catholics, highlighting their effective collaboration in making collective pilgrimage travel feasible and accessible to broad segments of the population. While highlighting the significant role played by Lourdes and other Jubilee celebrations, the Holy Year of 1950 is identified as the blossoming moment when the anticipatory signals of mass tourism, evident in early twentieth-century religious tourism, found their full expression. The chapter also emphasises the economic, territorial, and social significance of religious tourism, suggesting new opportunities for comparative and interdisciplinary research. These include exploring new historical archives, expanding the focus beyond Catholicism, and considering religious tourism as a historical laboratory for investigating socioeconomic resilience and sustainability.
