Abstract

The roots of gender inequality in labour’s reward run deep, but can our examination of wage sources tell us anything about how? This chapter aims to contribute to the knowledge of the regulation and organization of gendered work and earnings in early modern manufacturing with an urban Italian case study focusing on the eighteenth-century Factory of San Michele in Ripa Grande in Rome.
