Abstract

Apart from the north-east corner of the island, Ireland missed out on two industrial revolutions split over three centuries. The first and second industrial revolutions did not set economic conditions in stone forever, but they did leave many parts of the globe dealing with developmental gaps that would take decades, if not centuries, to close.
