Abstract

In 1914, tourists deserted Switzerland in a hurry because of World War I. Consequently, from 1915 onwards, the government intervened to avoid the collapse of the hospitality industry. Over time, the provisional aid measures, reactivated during the Depression of the 1930s, evolved into a long-term support system. Known as the Hotelhilfsaktion, it lasted until 1967. This intervention illustrates the fundamental reconfiguration of the relationship between the economy and the state during the first half of the twentieth century. The present contribution, part of a more extensive ongoing investigation, outlines how public support of the hospitality industry evolved from 1915 to 1967.
