Abstract

This introduction lays out the major themes treated in this volume which describes how Brazil in the past seventy years has emerged as a major world agricultural exporter. We do this by studying the evolution of all the major crops in which Brazil has now achieved extraordinary importance in the twenty-first century and for which it has become one of the leading competitors to the United States. To do this we examine the structure of agricultural production and the evolution of its exports. Next we then show how specific crops, and pastoral and forestry products have evolved since the 1950s. We first deal with seasonal crops and then permanent ones. Next we speak of the animal protein export industry as well as a major forestry sector. The final section deals with the questions of sustainability, and explains how this new agribusiness emerged.
