Abstract

Czechoslovak economic history represents an example of a historiography relatively isolated and minimally exposed to external methodological influences during the communist period. Analyzing various modes of transfer of ideas, this chapter explores the institutional framework for international cooperation as well as individual examples of cooperation through careful observation of the trajectories of development of historiography in other countries, direct cooperation with foreign scholars, or participation in conferences abroad. The Czechoslovak case studies focus on Alice Teichova (1920–2015), Miroslav Hroch (1932), and discussion of the Industrial Revolution. The analysis reveals that international cooperation and travels abroad were highly selective and political issues connected with ideological and bureaucratic obstacles. At the same time, economic historians were regularly updated regarding new developments in world historiography through the main home journals and leading journals in the field that were available in the main libraries in the country.
