Abstract

Both the “Soviet Union” and “Russia” challenge any scholar with the problems of historical continuity as well as national, ethnic, and regional diversity. In this chapter, the Soviet case study is presented mostly from the Ukrainian perspective. The chapter is focused on two Ukrainian schools of historical writing—Soviet republican and diaspora—established on both sides of the “Iron Curtain.” Each of them, in turn, was part of two large scholarly communities, “all-Soviet” and North American, and shared many of their characteristics. Thus, the issue of mutual contacts and cooperation between “Soviet” and “Western” students of economic history is presented as a polyphonic dialogue among various actors and narratives. The chapter analyzes many limitations and the rare possibilities for such a dialogue, which was not able to overcome Soviet political, ideological, and methodological restrictions.
