Abstract

The chapter introduces the mission of the book, which is to challenge the narrative of the non-cooperative nature of economic historians from socialist countries and to provide a deeper collective understanding of the multiple contemporary ideological and political circumstances that influenced scientific work behind the Iron Curtain, individual scientists’ careers, and their options to cooperate with their Western peers. The introduction also formulates the aims of the book, discusses its hypotheses, and offers the main conclusions of the book regarding the variety of everyday scientific practice in individual socialist countries, factors that influenced openness to international networks, and the principal motivations for international cooperation. Last but not least, the chapter offers an outline of the evolution of the field of economic history in socialist countries from the nineteenth century until the end of the Cold War.
