Abstract

This essay deals with engineers in the Spanish merchant marine. Steam navigation in Spain began around 1834. Since then, along full mechanisation of the Spanish merchant fleet, engineers had to fight their way to ensure their position among the traditional seamen, especially in relation to ship masters and deck officers. As a new profession at sea, engineers had to defend for decades several fronts to ensure their survival as a consolidated professional group. They were tough and resilient in the defence of their rights, especially regarding the borders of their position on board. Spanish ship engineers succeed in the recognition of their highly skilled profession, though social recognition was never fully achieved. The Spanish case shows some local characteristics that clearly illustrate the features of new maritime professions in second-rate maritime countries.
