Abstract

For centuries community grain banks (monti frumentari) played a pivotal role in the rural economy of a number of Italian regions. Despite the small scale of operation they pioneered a new and effective form of mutual assistance within a single village, or even within a single parish. This essay documents the spread and resilience of monti frumentari in rural communities across Romagna. It charts their actual functions and institutional features and discusses how different property patterns and agri-environmental contexts played a role in shaping the availability of these credit services. Finally, it devotes attention to a case study, the monte of Imola, one of the largest, most successful, and best-documented grain banks in the region.
