Abstract

This chapter examines social support systems in the diocese of Tortona in the eighteenth century. This area was characterized by a heterogeneous geographical/territorial and political conformation and an excellent point of observation to understand the ways and forms in which social support actions could be implemented in the Old Regime. Charity is examined in its anthropological acceptation as a “locus” of constant encounter/conflict among the many intermediate social-structuring bodies. Through the study of ecclesiastic sources (pastoral visits and parish reports), the chapter seeks to shed light on the attempts by bodies operating in the social support market to leverage the “ritual” nature of social support practices in order to assert their right to exist and a space for action within the community. While addressing social support actions generally, the chapter focuses particularly on the functions of the grain banks (monti frumentari) active in the northern part of the diocese of Tortona.
