Abstract

The chapter highlights the role played by parsons and parishes in managing social support systems in rural Italy in the early modern period. Constituent cells in the social tissue, parishes often managed social support policies—an emblematic case being the grain banks—either by spontaneous initiative of the parsons or via the action of other institutions (civil or ecclesiastic) present in the area. In this role, the parishes interacted (at times in problematic or conflictual ways) with other social bodies (such as confraternities or lay fellowships) that were traditionally involved in social support strategies to benefit the local communities.
