Abstract

In this article, I discuss female artisan mobility in the early modern kingdom of Sweden. By using Town Court records, I examine the migration of women who belonged to the lower urban bourgeoisie and were engaged in handicraft production whether by themselves or via their husbands. The two case studies discussed here show different migrant trajectories that bring forward new knowledge about mobility in Northern Europe and deepen our understanding of migration and integration processes, elucidating that women tended to travel over long distances, migrating multiple times and in different family roles, as singles, wives and mothers. The article brings forward the potential of court records but also displays this source’s limits in relation to research on the history of migration.
