Abstract

The chapter analyses the issues of the labour market and job creation. At present, a very small segment of Bangladesh’s 67 million strong workforce is reaping benefits from strong GDP growth, increasing shift into non-farm employment, and the country’s high-tech skills—but millions more could also do better. A new emphasis on decent employment would help the workforce meet aspirations. This requires a conscious effort, including in terms of measuring employment more holistically, targeting spending on initiatives, and changing regulation of private-sector investment and innovation to remove barriers to gainful employment. Bangladesh will have to create an increasing number of jobs in the coming decades to accommodate population growth, shifts in the age and sex composition of the population, changing age- and sex-specific labour force participation rates, rapid urbanisation and other socioeconomic changes.
