Abstract

The chapter identifies salient features of diverse experience of Bangladesh’s development over the last fifty years. Rising from ashes in 1971, Bangladesh provides one of Asia’s most amazing and unexpected success stories. Bangladesh’s transformation was driven by social changes, largely initiated by women empowerment. Micro-level success of innovative, low-cost solutions such as social development-intensive microfinance made significant strides towards creating initial condition state at the micro-level. These provided essential building blocks for developing critical linkages between micro- and macro-levels providing unique features of Bangladesh’s development model that ignited the country’s rapid transformation. The structural and policy reforms effectively responded to the micro-signals for change and adopted appropriate transformations. These micro–macro transmissions and their role in development are seldom acknowledged in traditional development literature.
