Abstract

This chapter introduces the major questions and debates addressed throughout this book. The central question is: when and why did handicraft cloth industries in East Africa decline? Many scholars assume that a nineteenth-century rise in cloth imports devastated local manufacturing, while others suggest that there is more to the story. This book employs quantitative and qualitative sources and methods to uncover the timing and causes of industrial arrest in southern and central East Africa. Findings are compared with existing studies on more resilient handicraft textile industries in northern East Africa and West Africa.
