Abstract

This chapter addresses the most relevant issues concerning wheat provisioning in the March of Ancona (in the middle of today’s Marche region). This kind of study is justified by the strong and homogeneous character of this territory under papal rule. The chapter is divided into three parts. First, the organisational structures of the victualling system are taken into account, starting from certain specific cases. This ‘horizontal’ analysis is conducted on local laws and official regulations. Then, a ‘vertical’ analysis follows, in which the mechanisms of accumulation and distribution of wheat are studied, with a focus on the cities of Macerata and Ancona. In the third and final part of this work, we suggest some concluding reflections on the role of trade in this victualling system.
