Abstract

Between 1939 and 1951, in a very unfavourable political and economic context, the Franco Administration tried to boost the pleasure travel industry. The authorities wanted to get the currencies that the nation needed so much, to boost the poor economy and improve the bad image that Spain had abroad, resulting in the creation of the Dirección General de Turismo. Its work, very conditioned by the interventionism and the scarcity of resources that characterised the economic policy of the first Francoism, materialised fundamentally in three aspects: (a) recover and increase the public offer framed in the Red de Establecimientos Turísticos del Estado; (b) improve and expand the knowledge that people abroad had of Spain; and (c) organise trips and excursions to different places in Spain and, from 1949, create the public company Autotransporte Turístico Español to operate a network of tourist circuits and offer a car and bus rental service.
