Abstract

When, in 1989/90, the two institutions had agreed on the alliance they faced a dilemma over how they should explain the purpose of their surprising joint undertaking. Initially they agreed quite simply and sensibly that this strategic alliance was in fact just an interim phase during which the partners could size each other up and weigh up the envisaged joint business activities. If the alliance were to prove itself the partners would have to approach the owners of the two banks in due course to recommend their merger.
