Abstract

It is a premise of this volume that we are living in extraordinary times. As Edmund O’Sullivan (2002) reminds us, we are not merely at a turning point in human history, but “a turning point in the very history of the earth itself” (p. 2). We are already in the midst of the most rapid mass extinction of species in 65 million years1 and if present patterns of resource use and greenhouse gas production continue, a six-degree rise in global temperature within our grandchildren’s lives will dramatically decrease the human population as well (Harvell et al., 2002).
