Abstract

The past two decades have witnessed a proliferation of the literature investigating the relationship between the environment and economic development. It is now widely recognised that economic growth especially in LDCs, to a considerable extent, has been achieved at the expense of substantial loss of natural environments. While the question of environmental change/degradation forms a key element in theoretical and empirical analyses, of late a third dimension, governance, has been added to the equation. International organisations such as the World Bank and other UN bodies as well as individual country and agencies emphasise the critical importance of governance and underscore the close interrelationships among the environment, economic development and governance.
