Abstract

Chile is a country of 13.6 million inhabitants, with a per capita income of US$ 4550 and relatively high social indicators: a literacy rate of 95 per cent, a life expectancy at birth of 72 years and an unemployment rate of around five per cent. Over the past two decades, Chile has undergone a process of fundamental economic and institutional reforms, as well as suffering significant economic crises and costly adjustment processes. Today the country is economically and politically stable, although important challenges remain, relating fundamentally to overcoming poverty.
